A timing belt is a toothed belt that keeps the top half of your engine aligned with the crankshaft and pistons in the bottom of the engine. Timing belt replacement is important because allowing it to go unrepaired can lead to very expensive engine damage. Your timing belt choreographs the timing of your combustion process as your pistons travel up and down in the cylinder. Intake valves open at a specific time to let in air and fuel and they close at a specific time to allow the fuel to burn, and then the exhaust valves open at the right time to let out the exhaust.
This may sound like a complicated process, but the timing belt is designed to make it all happen seamlessly. A typical timing belt replacement timeline is every 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. A faulty timing belt can have a directly negative impact on your engine. If your timing belt breaks while driving, your engine will stop working completely. The best way to avoid this is through preventative scheduled maintenance.
McCullough NAPA Auto Care staffs ASE Certified technicians with the experience and technology to properly diagnose any timing belt issues you may be experiencing with your Volvo. We’ve been in business since 1969 and have ample experience repairing and replacing timing belt systems for any Volvo model, including the V60, S60, XC40, and more!

My vehicle was on the verge of breaking down while I was in Sandy Springs for work last week (I live in a different town), and my boyfriend had determined that it was a problem with the alternator. He helped me find McCulloch Auto Care, which was right down the street. We'd noticed the good reviews, and we took a chance! The staff is super friendly, professional, and kind. They were able to confirm our suspicions about my car's specific issues, and took us as soon as they could. I was so impressed with their customer service. They really went above and beyond to meet my repair needs, had a fair price, and worked quickly to repair the issue. I almost wish I lived closer just so that I could have my car serviced here more often! Great family owned business.

This place is exactly the kind of service you come to expect. Great service, timely, and they never assume I don’t know what I’m talking about because I’m a girl.

I know for me one hard thing about choosing a mechanic is brushing off all previous notions I have about mechanics Potentially not treating my car how they would treat their own car. This place has done more than exceed my expectations. I got a phone call for every update, I got a thorough description of what was to be done and what was wrong, not only that, but where the dealership said it would take them two weeks to fix my car, these guys did it in less than 24 hours. I have never been happier to spend $300 in my life. Anything I need in the future, you can be sure I’ll bring it here.

I own and automotive repair business in Jacksonville, but my wife lives in Atlanta and needed tires for her car, so I know good service and fair pricing in this industry. I chose McCullough because of their good reviews and they did not disappoint. They were very professional and took good care of my wife. I would highly recommend them and will continue to use them for her service needs.

I have used this company twice and was VERY impressed both times with the honesty, knowledge, and cost-effectiveness of the mechanics that I worked with. They were upfront with me on what I needed to do now vs what could wait, showed me where I could save money, and worked with me to make sure I had my car finished before I needed it that weekend. Again, very very impressed. I wouldn't take my car anywhere else in Atlanta.

I have used McCullough for maintenance on my prior vehicle and received great service. Recently I had to repair my front bumper - I received an estimate for repair services that was reasonable. The estimated turn around time was less days than other auto shops. The best part was, the staff (Graham) was accommodating with my schedule and the repair was completed as expected/on time. The work completed was great. I absolutely recommended McCullough for auto care services.

Quick and excellent service. I was turned away at my regular mechanic because he said he didn’t know how to do a transmission fluid change. This was my first time ever going to McCullough auto care, and I was very happy with my service. They were able to see me immediately and were patient with me considering the circumstances. Eric was great, and even matched the prices of another mechanic down the road. I will be back! Would recommend!

I have used McCullough Auto Care for more than10 years. I needed a reliable auto maintenance service because I commuted weekly to Birmingham. One of the nice things about these guys is they listen when I mention an issue with the car, go over their inspection results of my car and review my bill in detail. I have never been disappointed in their service or the cost of the service I received.

I had a check engine light on Saturday afternoon, ended up being an engine coil pack needing to be replaced. It was obviously super busy and I knew I would need to leave it until Monday to get looked at. Staff was very informative and communication was excellent. Got it looked at Monday and ordered necessary part to come in the next day. Went ahead and did the spark plugs as well since I was nearing 60k miles. Picked it up after lunch with no issues. Seems like they do really well with the small space provided and very busy area right off 285

Good, honest, and fair shop. If you are in sandy spring, I would not go anywhere else. Family owned and operated - take care of their customers and their crew it seems. 6 stars

Very respectful, honest, and professional. I was having issues with my headlights, and they fixed it for a reasonable price. They do a lot to ensure that you have a positive experience, and that you're not wasting your money on unnecessary parts or repairs. Top notch service, A+!

I would normally recommend this business as I have been here a few times. I went there Friday for an oil change. However, I honestly didn't feel safe. They have signs that customers must wear a mask. There was only one employee wearing a mask themselves. All the others didn't have a mask on. I feel this is disrespectful to their customers. I understand it can be uncomfortable but it is essential during these times.

Very honest mechanics. Eric kept me in the loop with my cars progress. I got the car back in a reasonable amount of time considering the work that had to be done.

I may have written one other recommendation in my of 50 years, but after doing business with Eric McCullough for 35 of those years it is time to write another one. He maintained and serviced my auto's, my wife, kids and employees for 32 of those 35 years. He has stood behind the work on everything he and his employees have done. He operates his business with great honesty and integrity. I highly recommend doing business. with McCullough

McCullough has been my family's go-to mechanic for decades. Don't know what I would do without them - just a super-nice family that will take care of your cars. Their service is important to us because once we get a new car, we like to hold onto it for years (10-12). Highly recommend.

Great service! The entire team is so friendly and helpful. They were able to diagnose the issue and stayed with it until the problem was resolved.

Graham was great and was up front about everything that needed to be done. My son's jeep went down on the Saturday before Memorial Day and they had him ready around 1pm that Thursday. Quick turn around in my eyes. Nice employees, everyone was cordial and friendly.

After recently moving to the area, I had a vehicle emergency where my transmission needed replacing. Graham immediately took me in and was SO kind, professional, and direct about the costs; one of their kind staff members even drove me home after my car was dropped for repair so that I did not have to call a car service. They were so patient with me and got my car back to me in one day completely fixed and ready to go! I will never use any other automotive repair shop in the area! ABSOLUTELY recommend without hesitation!

Signs You Need Timing Belt or Timing Chain Replacement
A bad timing belt may produce a ticking, rattling sound from the engine as the belt develops a looser fit against the engine. Misfiring or backfiring is also common with bad timing belts. Here are 5 signs that your Volvo timing belt or timing chain needs replacement.
Engine Misfire: One of the primary signs of a timing belt or chain issue is engine misfires. The timing belt or chain synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft so that the engine’s valves open and close at the correct times. If the belt or chain is worn or damaged, it can slip and cause the engine to misfire. If left unresolved, this can lead to a catastrophic engine failure.
Ticking Noise from the Engine: A ticking noise from the engine is often indicative of a worn or loose timing belt or chain. The belt or chain connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, controlling the opening and closing of the engine valves. If it’s loose, it can produce a ticking or clicking sound as the engine runs. This should not be ignored as it may lead to serious engine damage.
Rough Idling or Difficulty in Starting the Car: When the teeth on the timing belt wear out, they can detach and fall into the timing chain cover, causing the engine to idle roughly or making it difficult to start the car. The engine may also stutter or stall due to the inability of the valves and pistons to synchronize properly.
Oil Leakage: A worn-out timing belt or chain can lead to oil leakage from the front of the motor. The belt or chain runs through various engine components, and wear and tear can cause these components, like the timing cover, to loosen. This looseness can result in oil leakage, which can lead to more severe engine issues if not promptly addressed.
Engine Fails to Turn Over: If your Volvo’s engine will not turn over or start, it may be due to a broken timing belt or chain. The timing belt or chain is essential for the pistons and valves to function correctly. A broken belt or chain means that these components won’t move, leading to the engine failing to start.
In all these cases, it’s crucial to get the car to a service center for inspection as soon as possible. Ignoring these warning signs can lead to more severe and expensive damage, including possible engine failure.
Can a Broken Timing Belt or Chain Destroy My Volvo Engine?
The answer is tricky as it depends on what type of engine you have. Interference engines can easily be destroyed by a broken timing belt, whereas non-interference engines are unlikely to be damaged from a broken timing belt. However, even with a non-interference engine, you should still follow your Volvo’s recommended timing belt replacement cycle. If you’re unsure what type of engine your Volvo has, the technicians at McCullough NAPA Auto Care can determine that for you and make recommendations for how best to repair or replace your timing belt.
