A Tribute to Roderick L. “Rod” McCullough
Founder of McCullough Auto Care & Tire

With heavy hearts, we announce that the McCullough Auto Care family has lost our father, founder, and mentor. Roderick “Rod” L. McCullough passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, at the age of 86. A man of integrity, quiet strength, and entrepreneurial spirit, Rod built a lasting legacy in both business and community, leaving behind a life marked by dedication, service, and love for his family.

Roderick moved to the Atlanta area from his native home in Anderson, South Carolina, in the 1960s, focused on starting his family business. He became a successful businessman during the 1970s, owning and operating several Shell service stations throughout the area. In 1969, he founded McCullough Auto Care in Sandy Springs, Georgia, with just $1,200 and a clear vision. Over the decades, Rod grew the business into a trusted name, known for its honest service and family-oriented values.

Rod found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved long bike rides, peaceful walks along his favorite beach, and cheering on his beloved Clemson Tigers. Above all, he was most proud of his family. He celebrated their accomplishments with pride and never missed an opportunity to remind others that “family is the most important thing in life.”

Rod’s legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, many of whom have followed in his footsteps and contributed to the family business.  Through every customer served, every child mentored, and every value passed down, Rod McCullough’s legacy endures — a testament to a life well-lived and a family business built on trust, hard work, and heart.

Does Hot Asphalt Wear Out Tires Faster?

Table of Contents

We’re no strangers to extreme heat here in Atlanta, Georgia. When temperatures rise, so does the heat radiating from hot asphalt. Your tires are the only part of your vehicle that comes directly with the road, and this heat can significantly impact your vehicle’s tires and expedite wear and tear. In regions like Georgia, where summer temperatures can soar, understanding how hot asphalt affects your tires is crucial for maintaining longevity and ensuring safe driving conditions.

Why Do Tires Wear Out More In The Heat?

Modern tires are engineered from a complex mix of rubber compounds to withstand various road conditions, including extreme heat. However, despite their advanced composition, high temperatures can still negatively impact tire durability and performance.

When driving on hot asphalt, the heat from the road surface transfers to the tires, increasing their internal temperature. This added heat can cause the rubber to become more pliable, leading to faster wear. So, to answer your question, yes, driving on hot asphalt can wear out your tires faster. The increased temperature can also exacerbate the natural wear process, causing the tread to degrade more quickly than it would under cooler conditions. The combination of high heat and friction from driving accelerates the breakdown of the tire’s materials, ultimately shortening its lifespan.

Another critical factor to consider is tire pressure (PSI). With rising temperatures, the air inside the tire expands, increasing the tire pressure. Overinflated tires can lead to uneven tread wear, reduced traction, and a harsher ride. Monitoring tire pressure regularly, especially during the summer months, is essential to ensure it remains within the manufacturer’s recommended range. Proper tire pressure not only helps maintain optimal performance but also extends the life of the tire.

How To Make Tires Last Longer In Extreme Heat

Taking care of your tires during extreme heat is essential to prolong their life and ensure safe driving. Here are some tips to help you manage tire wear in hot conditions:

  • Regular Tire Inspections: Check your tires for signs of wear, damage, or punctures. Look for uneven tread wear, cracks, or bulges. Early detection of these issues can prevent further damage and ensure timely repairs or replacements.

  • Maintain Proper Tire Pressure: Check your tire pressure at least once a month and before long trips. Use a reliable tire gauge to ensure your tires are inflated to the recommended PSI. Proper tire inflation helps avoid uneven wear and improves fuel efficiency.

  • Rotate Your Tires: Regular tire rotation helps ensure even wear across all tires. Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation, typically every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. Rotating your tires can extend their life and improve performance.

  • Avoid Overloading Your Vehicle: Excess weight stresses your tires, leading to increased wear. Be mindful of your vehicle’s load capacity and avoid carrying unnecessary heavy items, especially during hot weather.

  • Drive Smoothly: Aggressive driving, such as rapid acceleration, hard braking, and sharp turns, can accelerate tire wear. Practice smooth and steady driving to reduce the strain on your tires.

  • Park in the Shade: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in shaded areas to protect your tires from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause the rubber to degrade more quickly.

  • Use High-Quality Tires: Invest in high-quality tires designed to withstand extreme temperatures. Premium tires often have better heat resistance and durability, making them worthwhile investments for long-term performance.

FAQ About How Heat Affects Tires

Tires can typically withstand temperatures up to around 120°F (49°C). However, consistent exposure to temperatures above this range can cause the rubber to degrade more quickly, leading to accelerated wear and potential failure.

Yes, tires can lose air when it’s hot. As the temperature rises, the air inside the tire expands, increasing the pressure. Over time, this can cause small leaks or damage to the tire, resulting in a gradual loss of air.

Yes, tires can become bald more quickly in hot conditions. The increased heat causes the rubber to soften and wear out faster, leading to reduced tread depth and bald spots.

Yes, tires wear faster in the heat. The combination of high temperatures and friction from the road accelerates the breakdown of the tire’s rubber compounds, leading to quicker tread wear and a shorter tire lifespan.

Hot weather can significantly impact tire health, leading to faster wear and a higher risk of damage. Consistently driving on hot asphalt can cause the rubber to degrade and increase the likelihood of tire failure if proper maintenance is not performed.
