A Tribute to Roderick L. “Rod” McCullough
Founder of McCullough Auto Care & Tire

With heavy hearts, we announce that the McCullough Auto Care family has lost our father, founder, and mentor. Roderick “Rod” L. McCullough passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, at the age of 86. A man of integrity, quiet strength, and entrepreneurial spirit, Rod built a lasting legacy in both business and community, leaving behind a life marked by dedication, service, and love for his family.

Roderick moved to the Atlanta area from his native home in Anderson, South Carolina, in the 1960s, focused on starting his family business. He became a successful businessman during the 1970s, owning and operating several Shell service stations throughout the area. In 1969, he founded McCullough Auto Care in Sandy Springs, Georgia, with just $1,200 and a clear vision. Over the decades, Rod grew the business into a trusted name, known for its honest service and family-oriented values.

Rod found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved long bike rides, peaceful walks along his favorite beach, and cheering on his beloved Clemson Tigers. Above all, he was most proud of his family. He celebrated their accomplishments with pride and never missed an opportunity to remind others that “family is the most important thing in life.”

Rod’s legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, many of whom have followed in his footsteps and contributed to the family business.  Through every customer served, every child mentored, and every value passed down, Rod McCullough’s legacy endures — a testament to a life well-lived and a family business built on trust, hard work, and heart.

Spring Vehicle Maintenance Get Your Car Ready For Warmer Weather

Table of Contents

As spring arrives in Georgia, now is the perfect time to prepare your car for warmer temperatures and upcoming road trips. Months of fluctuating weather, pollen, and rough road conditions can take a toll on your vehicle. Routine maintenance ensures optimal performance, fuel efficiency, and a smooth driving experience.

Here’s why spring is the best time for a checkup and what should be on your car’s spring maintenance checklist.

Why Spring Car Maintenance is Important in Georgia

Georgia’s spring weather brings warmer temperatures, heavy pollen, and rainy conditions, which can impact your car’s performance. Here are a few common seasonal concerns every Georgia driver should address:

1. Pollen Can Clog Your Cabin & Engine Air Filters

Springtime pollen is unavoidable in Georgia, and your car’s cabin air filter is the first line of defense against allergens and dust. A clogged filter can reduce airflow from your vents, make your A/C less effective, and worsen allergy symptoms while driving.

Your engine air filter can also get clogged with pollen and debris, restricting airflow to the engine and reducing fuel efficiency.

Solution: Replace your cabin and engine air filters to improve air quality and optimize engine performance.

2. Potholes and Rough Roads Can Cause Alignment Issues

Winter and early spring rain can create potholes and uneven road conditions, leading to misaligned wheels, uneven tire wear, and poor handling. If your car pulls to one side or your steering feels off, an alignment check can restore smooth, even handling.

Solution: Have your alignment and suspension checked to prevent excess tire wear and ensure better driving stability.

3. Rainy Season Increases the Need for Good Wipers & Tires

Springtime in Georgia often means frequent rain showers and wet roads, making visibility and tire traction critical for safe driving.

  • Worn-out wiper blades leave streaks and reduce visibility.
  • Bald or uneven tires increase the risk of hydroplaning on wet roads.

Solution: Replace old wiper blades and check tire tread depth to improve safety during spring rain.

4. Rising Temperatures Can Impact Your Car’s Cooling System

As Georgia heads into the warmer months, your car’s cooling system must work properly to prevent overheating. If left unchecked, low coolant levels, old hoses, or a failing radiator can cause serious engine damage.

Solution: Have your coolant levels, radiator, and hoses inspected to ensure they’re ready for rising temperatures.

Spring Vehicle Maintenance Checklist

Beyond addressing seasonal concerns, routine maintenance keeps your car running smoothly all year. Here’s what should be on your spring checklist:

1. Oil & Fluid Check

  • Engine Oil: Ensure your oil is clean and at the proper level to maintain engine performance.
  • Brake Fluid: Old brake fluid can reduce braking efficiency—spring is an excellent time for a check.
  • Transmission Fluid: Proper fluid levels keep your transmission shifting smoothly.

2. Tire Pressure & Rotation

Tire pressure fluctuates with seasonal temperature changes and can lead to uneven wear if not adjusted.

  • Check and adjust tire pressure for fuel efficiency and even wear.
  • Rotate your tires to extend their lifespan.

3. Battery Performance Check

A weak battery can leave you stranded on a hot Georgia afternoon. If your car has been slow to start or the battery is over three years old, have it tested.

4. Brake Inspection

Brakes can wear down over time, and spring is the perfect time for an inspection. If you’ve noticed squeaking, grinding, or longer stopping distances, it may be time for new brake pads.

5. A/C System Inspection

As temperatures rise, your air conditioning system must be in top shape to keep you cool on the road. If your A/C isn’t blowing cold air or has weak airflow, it could be due to low refrigerant, a clogged cabin filter, or failing components.

  • Check refrigerant levels and recharge if necessary.
  • Inspect belts, hoses, and the compressor for wear.
  • Replace the cabin air filter to improve airflow and air quality.
