Whether your child is going back to college or heading off for their first year, getting their car ready doesn’t have to be a nerve-racking experience. Your child’s safety is important, and so is the safety of the vehicle that’s taking them to campus.

Here are some preemptive car maintenance tips for your back-to-school college student.

1 – Have a Multi-Point Inspection Performed

McCullough NAPA Auto Care offers multi-point inspections with any scheduled service. We can perform any necessary repairs before your student hits the road back to school!

Our multi-point inspection includes:

  • Check and top off fluid levels
  • Check all air filters and replace them as needed
  • Battery strength inspection
  • Inspection of headlights and other bulbs
  • Check tires for uneven pressure and tread wear
  • Inspect hoses, belts, wiper blades, and other key areas
Our multi-point inspections are complementary when you have a service scheduled. It’s a good idea to schedule an oil change and a multi-point inspection before your child leaves for college.

2 – Pack an Emergency Roadside Assistance Kit

Preparation is key! Send them off with an emergency roadside kit in case of a breakdown. The kit should include jumper cables, reflectors, road flares, a flashlight with batteries, and a tire pressure gauge. Consider also a first aid kit of bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and scissors.

3 – Update Paperwork

We pray they never happen, but traffic ticket encounters and accidents are possibilities on the road. Ensure that the vehicle’s registration and insurance paperwork are up to date with your child’s information and that they know where to find them. This is also an excellent time to review what to do when pulled over or involved in an accident. Talk about pulling the vehicle to the side of the road, providing additional information as needed, and taking pictures of both vehicle damage, where applicable, are important points to reinforce.

4 – Consider Our Scheduled Mile Maintenance Programs

McCullough NAPA Auto Care offers 30k, 60k, and 90k mile maintenance plans for your college student’s vehicle. Consider joining, and our ASE-certified technicians can inspect their vehicle on schedule as they come home for the holidays or other reasons. Having an auto repair shop you can trust is a must-have for those driving back and forth to school.

We also offer our NAPA Nationwide ‘Peace of Mind’ warranty covering parts and labor on all qualifying repairs and services for up to 12 months or 12,000 miles. This warranty is honored at more than 14,000 locations nationwide, making it ideal for your college student.
