Your axles are an extremely important part of your vehicle. They are the last link in transferring power from the engine to your wheels. They’re strong parts that can last a long time, but they can run into trouble.

Axles just wear out over time and need to be replaced. Sometimes axle seals leak lubricant which allows water and dirt to get in and contaminate the gears, causing the axle to wear out early. If this happens, you may hear strange noises coming from your axle.

If you have a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the sound would be on the rear end. Similarly, if you drive a front-wheel vehicle, it would be coming from the front. Of course, with an all-wheel-drive vehicle, the sound could be coming from either end. It might be a groaning sound or clunking when turning.

There are different kinds of axles, each with its potential problems. Your NAPA AutoCare service technician knows this and checks for things like leaking seals, torn CV boots, worn axle joints, and the like. An inspection will reveal any problems or parts that may be nearing failure.

When there is a concern with the axle shaft, it will be removed and inspected. If it’s damaged, the shaft will have to be replaced. However, if the shaft is in good shape, it’ll be cleaned, lubed, and reinstalled. Damaged CV boots are replaced as well.

It’s important to take care of this work as soon as you become aware of a problem. Waiting will only give the damage time to become worse and more expensive to repair later. If the axle fails, it could lock up. This could severely damage other things like your transmission; it could even contribute to an accident!

Taking care of your axles when they need service saves time and money in the long run, and it will help keep you safe on the road. Visit your local NAPA AutoCare Center today!
